Grit Challenge #1: Nitty Gritty Triangle

✨Grit & Growth Mindset Challenges: Build Resiliency Skills✨ 

Most growth mindset activities, posters, bulletin boards, coloring pages, positive affirmations or worksheets only discuss what Growth Mindset is & its importance. These Math Logic Puzzles encourage GRIT and a Growth Mindset allowing students to better understand and apply these theories by practicing them in the learning pit.

This product includes Grit Challenge #1: The Nitty Gritty Triangle Challenge.

Students will complete the Magic Math Triangle, where all digits along the perimeter of the triangle must add up to the given magic sum. There are two triangles with 4 possible magic sums totaling 8 activities! There is a signature section where you can require the student to get a signature from you, a classmate, or their own before moving on.

✅ Of all the things we teach our students, it’s hard to think of a concept or objective in the curriculum as crucial as instilling grit or how to have a growth mindset. GRIT and Growth Mindset are the hot topics in the classroom at the moment and for very good reason. However, most products, blog posts, and resources only discuss what it is, what it looks like, and its importance of it.

This activity as well as the other GRIT challenges allow you to explicitly teach it. These activities are designed to make the students struggle, fail, and to experience the depths of the learning pit. By doing so you are able to pinpoint those emotions, and thoughts, and capitalize on them.

I introduce these challenges in the first week of school and use them throughout the school year. These also make the perfect activity for New Years, Beginning of New Terms, Goal-Setting Activities and anytime your class needs a little refresher. A tough activity is the perfect discussion starter as to why it is so important we facilitate a growth mindset and know what GRIT is.

​

These challenges apply to such a wide range of grade and age levels because they are based on:

• Thinking outside the box
• Persevering to solve
• Learning from mistakes

My favorite part of this product is the reflection sheet. Students identify an emotion on the learning pit that best illustrates where they were before the activity ended. This activity requires a minimum of 20 minutes per triangle. By no means will a student finish all 4 triangle challenges, however, if you are short on time this will allow enough time for students to get the gist.

​

ANSWER KEY is included! Take each challenge a step further and see if the students can find multiple solutions per magic number Triangle. Great for critical and higher-level thinking.
